The recording
The tracking for the album American Idiot took place at various studios including Ocean Way Recording. Producer Rob Cavallo and the band sought a 'solid, big, thunderous' rock sound, moving away from ultra-high gain toward a punchy, mid-focused, and clear tube-amp driven tone. The basic heavy rhythm sound was typically captured using double-tracked guitars through the modded Marshall heads.
