The recording
The tracking for 'Welcome to Paradise' (and the Dookie album) took place at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, in 1994 with producer Rob Cavallo. The band rehearsed extensively, allowing them to capture basic tracks in only a few takes. Billie Joe tracked his rhythm parts using a straightforward path into his modified 100-watt Marshall Super Lead heads. Recording engineer Neil King utilized a combination of close microphones, including the Shure SM57 and Sennheiser MD421, along with a Neumann U87 for room presence, ensuring an aggressive, dry, and 'in-your-face' punk sound.
