The recording
The 'Rise Above' recording featured on the 'Damaged' album was captured at Unicorn Studios in West Hollywood with producer/engineer Spot. The recording process for 'Damaged' was notoriously laborious; the band recorded the backing tracks without a vocalist, and Henry Rollins overdubbed his vocal parts later. Greg Ginn’s guitar sound is defined by his choice of unconventional solid-state amplification, which provides the characteristically harsh, biting, and direct tone that became a hallmark of the early hardcore sound.
