The recording
The backing track for 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' was recorded at Ear Studios in London. Mick Jones, who wrote the song, utilized his established rig of Gibson Les Pauls and Mesa/Boogie amplification. Producers and the band tracked the song during a period of significant internal management strife. The signature overdriven tone is characterized by Jones' aggressive picking, with a subtle slapback echo applied during mixing to provide the riff with its distinctive sonic width.
