The song was recorded in 2003 at 'The Rubin's House' in San Diego, a rented mansion converted into a studio. The band, working with producer Jerry Finn, experimented with a departure from their punk-pop roots toward a darker, mature, and experimental sound. 'I Miss You' is built around acoustic instrumentation, stand-up bass, cello, and programmed drum loops, and Tom DeLonge's guitar part relies on overdubbed acoustic guitar takes rather than the high-gain electric rigs used on other tracks.
