The recording
The song 'Wish You Were Here' was recorded during the 1975 sessions at Abbey Road Studios with Pink Floyd and engineer Brian Humphries. The distinctive opening riff was captured on a 12-string Martin guitar. To achieve the iconic 'radio' sound, David Gilmour and the band ran a signal from the control room out to a microphone placed in Gilmour's car, which was parked in the studio car park, effectively re-amping the guitar through the car's limited-fidelity radio speakers to create the classic, atmospheric, thin-sounding intro.
