The recording
The solo for 'Stairway to Heaven' was tracked at Island Studios in London following the initial sessions at Headley Grange. Jimmy Page, acting as producer, treated the solo as a stream-of-consciousness performance. Performed at the very end of the song's production—after all other overdubs and vocals were completed—the recording was achieved in just a few takes. Page abandoned his usual Les Paul rig in favor of his 1959 Fender Telecaster to ensure the guitar would cut through the dense arrangement of recorders and layered guitars recorded previously.
