The recording
The track was recorded at Pathway Studios in London, produced by Muff Winwood. Mark Knopfler played his '61 Stratocaster, opting for a clean, non-distorted signal path through a Fender Vibrolux, combined with his signature fingerstyle technique (thumb and index) to create the percussive, bell-like tone. While some sources suggest the compression was achieved via a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer pedal, it is also highly likely that compression was added during the mixing phase to achieve the final polished sound.
