The recording
Recorded for the album 'Led Zeppelin IV' at Headley Grange. Jimmy Page played his 1959 Les Paul into a direct box, utilizing the console's mic preamp to generate harmonic distortion. The part was triple-tracked to achieve the signature dense, rhythmic 'Black Dog' riff sound. The production was managed by Jimmy Page with engineering influence from Andy Johns, who noted that the resulting sound mimics a power amp/speaker cabinet despite being DI.
