The recording
The 1977 version of 'Mannish Boy' was recorded during the sessions for the album Hard Again at The Schoolhouse, a studio in Dan Hartman's Westport, CT home. Produced by Johnny Winter, the session captured the live energy of Muddy's touring band—Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins, and Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith—playing simultaneously in the same room without isolation, resulting in the raw, immediate sound characterized by Muddy's amplified guitar and shouted call-and-response vocals.
