Neal Schon crafted the guitar solo and rhythm parts by thinking in symphonic terms, contributing his iconic 'chunky' rhythm and melodic lead lines using his 1977 Gibson Les Paul. The band struggled to nail the tempo for the song's complex sections until they settled into a single live-take performance.
