The recording
The song was recorded in 1981 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, with producers Kevin Elson and Mike Stone. The instrumental tracks were tracked live as a group. Neal Schon crafted the guitar solo and rhythm parts by thinking in symphonic terms, contributing his iconic 'chunky' rhythm and melodic lead lines using his 1977 Gibson Les Paul. The band struggled to nail the tempo for the song's complex sections until they settled into a single live-take performance.
