Recorded at Regent Sound Studios and Island Studios in 1970, Iron Man emerged from a studio improvisation where Tony Iommi reacted to a heavy drum beat played by Bill Ward. Inspired by the ominous rhythm, Iommi composed the iconic riff on the spot, describing it as a monster creeping up. The recording is defined by its thick, mid-heavy distortion, achieved by modifying his own gear to push the amplifiers beyond standard limits.
