The recording

Metallica recorded “Master of Puppets” at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen during September–December 1985 with producer/engineer Flemming Rasmussen. The guitars were double‑tracked for massive thickness, routed through a White Jackson King V (bridge pickup) into a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ rewired as a pre‑amp. An Aphex Studio EQ was placed on the amp’s insert to fine‑tune the tone before feeding the signal into a Marshall JCM800 100 W power amp and out to a pair of June‑July 1985 Marshall JCM800 4×12 cabinets loaded with Celestion G12T‑75 speakers.

Practical playing approach

Recreation guidance, not a claim about undocumented studio control positions.

  1. 1.Select the bridge pickup for maximum attack.
  2. 2.Use tight palm‑muted downstrokes for the chuggy rhythm riffs.
  3. 3.Practice alternate picking at 180‑200 BPM to match the song’s tempo.
  4. 4.Tune the guitar down a half step (E♭) and keep the low‑E string tight for fast passages.

Frequently asked questions

What gear was used for the Master of Puppets guitar tone?

The available research points to White Jackson King V into Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ (preamp). The full reported signal chain and evidence links are listed on this page.

Are the original Master of Puppets amp settings documented?

Exact historical knob positions are not reliably documented for most recordings. ToneTwin does not publish generated values as studio fact; it creates playable settings only for the amp and pedals a player selects.

What tuning is Master of Puppets in?

The current research record lists E♭ Standard (E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭). ToneTwin keeps corrections open when reliable accounts disagree.

How do I recreate the Master of Puppets tone on my own gear?

Use the reported pickup, gain character, effects and signal-chain order as the target, then translate that target to your equipment. The matcher models controls for your selected rig rather than copying undocumented studio numbers.
