For early Black Sabbath, use an SG-style guitar into a treble booster and a loud Laney- or British-style tube amp. Set medium-high gain, controlled bass, strong mids and clear treble. Keep the main riff sound dry. Iron Man, Paranoid and War Pigs need less gain and more midrange than a modern metal preset.

Use these as modern starting values. The original Laney controls, the modified booster and the speakers do not map one-to-one to a current practice amp.
The documented early signal chain
Iommi has repeatedly described the early core as his SG, a modified Dallas-Arbiter Rangemaster and Laney amplifiers. In a Guitar World interview, he explained that the small booster hit the amplifier input harder. He also stated that the first-album sound was the SG through the Rangemaster into the Laney. Laney's own history identifies its amplifiers with the first record.
The exact booster was modified and later lost. That means a modern guide can identify the function—input level, upper-mid focus and reduced flub—but must not present a current stock pedal's dial as a recovered studio setting.

All three songs are from the Paranoid period and share a gear family, but they do not need identical control states. The quick attack in Paranoid benefits from less bass and gain. Iron Man can hold more low-mid weight. War Pigs needs enough dynamic range for the arrangement to expand.
Set the treble booster correctly
- Set the amplifier to open vintage crunch before the booster is active.
- Keep the booster drive low if it has a drive control.
- Raise output until the amplifier becomes firmer and more vocal.
- Trim bass before the amplifier if the low strings become loose.
- Reduce amplifier presence if the upper edge becomes painful.
A treble booster is not only a treble EQ. Its level and frequency focus change how the first amplifier stage distorts. A transparent clean boost can work, but you may need an EQ before it to remove low bass and focus the upper mids.
Use the correct tuning era
Iron Man, Paranoid and War Pigs use the earlier standard-tuning reference. The famous lower C-sharp tuning is associated with Master of Reality and later material. Do not move every Black Sabbath song into one low tuning. Iommi's light strings and fingertip technique also affect the feel, but copying an unusually light set is not required to create the frequency balance.
Translate the rig to modern equipment
- Modern high-gain amp: choose crunch, lower resonance and retain mids.
- Fender-style clean amp: use a British preamp or foundation overdrive after the booster.
- Modeler: choose a Laney Supergroup or early British 100-watt family with a period-style cabinet.
- Humbucker guitar: use the bridge pickup and reduce amplifier gain if it is much hotter than a P-90.
- Single-coil guitar: add low mids, control noise and avoid excess presence.
