The recording
The track was recorded in 1983 at Strawberry Studios in Stockport with producer John Porter. Johnny Marr overdubbed approximately 15 guitar tracks, including the primary parts played on a 1954 Telecaster (tuned up to F#) and a Rickenbacker 330. The production also utilized unconventional techniques, such as the sound of a metal-handled knife dropped onto the strings during the chorus.
