The recording
Recorded in May 1983 at Music America Studios, Seek & Destroy was one of the first studio experiences for Metallica, who at the time were accustomed to playing rehearsals in a Queens rehearsal space. The producer and engineer were inexperienced with the band's aggressive, loud sound, initially setting recording levels as they would for a traditional rock band, which resulted in significant, unplanned distortion that required later remixing by the engineer. James Hetfield provided the rhythm parts, while Kirk Hammett quickly improvised his lead solos. The final arrangement, defined by Hetfield's signature down-picked, percussive rhythm riffs, established the track as a foundational thrash metal anthem.
