The recording
The 'Midnight Blue' album was recorded on January 8, 1963, at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, engineered by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Alfred Lion. Kenny Burrell led the session on guitar, accompanied by Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone), Major Holley Jr. (double bass), Bill English (drums), and Ray Barretto (conga). The recording is noted for its intimate, 'in-the-room' atmosphere, with Van Gelder's signature microphone techniques capturing the natural, warm tube saturation of Burrell's rig.
