The recording
The track 'Impressions' was recorded during the legendary 'Smokin' at the Half Note' sessions (1965). The studio recordings for the Verve release were primarily produced by Creed Taylor, often at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Montgomery played with the Wynton Kelly trio (Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums). The studio sound is defined by Rudy Van Gelder's miking techniques, which often involved a mix of direct amplifier miking and direct-to-board signal blending.
