The recording
The 'Virtuoso' album (1973) was recorded in a single session by producer Norman Granz. Legend suggests that the recording setup was intended to use an amplifier, but when it malfunctioned or proved unnecessary, the clean, natural acoustic sound of Joe Pass's ES-175 was captured directly, defining his signature solo style on this record.
