The recording

Recorded at Barnyard Studios in Essex between 1991 and April 1992, the track was produced by Martin Birch and Steve Harris. Dave Murray used a Fender Stratocaster equipped with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups, feeding a Marshall JCM800 2203 head, with Boss CE‑2 and Boss CH‑1 chorus pedals in the signal chain. The rhythm guitars were double‑tracked and panned left‑right, creating the thick, soaring tone heard on the recording.

Practical playing approach

Recreation guidance, not a claim about undocumented studio control positions.

  1. 1.Select the bridge pickup and roll the tone knob back slightly for a sharper attack.
  2. 2.Use smooth legato hammer‑ons and pull‑offs for the melodic solo lines.
  3. 3.Apply subtle vibrato and wide bends on sustained notes to emulate Murray’s phrasing.
  4. 4.Maintain consistent picking dynamics to keep the rhythm tight.
  5. 5.Double‑track the rhythm parts and pan them left‑right for a fuller wall of sound.

Use the reported pickup, gain character, effects and signal-chain order as the target, then translate that target to your equipment. The matcher models controls for your selected rig rather than copying undocumented studio numbers.
