The recording

Thinking Out Loud was recorded in early 2014 at Sticky Studios in Dorking, Surrey, UK. Produced and engineered by Jake Gosling, the session was designed to capture a warm, intimate 'live band' aesthetic. Ed Sheeran performed the acoustic guitar and vocals, while session musician Chris Leonard contributed additional electric guitar, bass, and Hammond organ parts to flesh out the arrangement. The production process was notably rapid, originating from a demo Sheeran brought to the studio.
