The recording
The song was recorded in early 1978 at Studio 55 in Los Angeles for Toto's debut album. The band served as producers alongside engineer Tom Knox. Steve Lukather, 19 at the time, recorded the guitar parts, including the solo, largely in one take. The riff was composed by David Paich, and the guitar tone is direct, capturing a 'hard rock meets pop' sensibility that would define the band's signature studio sound.
