The recording

Cold Shot was recorded in 1983 at the Power Station in New York for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 1984 album *Couldn't Stand the Weather*. The song is played a half‑step down (E♭ standard) and features the neck and middle pickups of Vaughan’s Number One Strat, producing a thick, mid‑rich tone. SRV cranked a Fender Vibroverb and a Dumble Overdrive Special to full, using natural tube breakup, spring reverb and a rotary speaker effect to create the warbly, singing lead that defines the track.
