The recording
Recorded in 1971 at Wally Heider's Studio 3 in Los Angeles for Bill Withers' debut album, 'Just As I Am'. The session was produced by Booker T. Jones and engineered by Bill Halverson. The recording captured a 'live in the room' performance with Stephen Stills on acoustic guitar, Donald 'Duck' Dunn on bass, Al Jackson Jr. on drums, and Bill Withers providing vocals and rhythmic foot tapping. The string section was overdubbed later, but the core guitar riff and band foundation remained as a live capture. No amplifiers were used for the guitar.
