The recording

Mark Knopfler recorded the lead part on a 1961 Fender Stratocaster using his signature fingerstyle technique, selecting the middle and bridge pickups. The signal passed through a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer compressor for subtle sustain, then into a brown Fender Vibrolux (6G11) combo amp. External reverb was added in the mix, and the guitar was mic'd with a Neumann microphone by engineer Chas Herington at Pathway Studios in July 1977.

Practical playing approach

Recreation guidance, not a claim about undocumented studio control positions.

  1. 1.Select the middle‑bridge pickup position on a Stratocaster for a bright, cutting tone
  2. 2.Use fingerstyle hybrid picking to articulate each note cleanly
  3. 3.Keep the volume knob near full to drive the amp's clean headroom
  4. 4.Apply light compression to even out dynamics without squashing the tone
  5. 5.Play with a light touch to let the amp's natural sparkle shine
