Sultans of Swing

The recording

Sultans of Swing was originally conceived by Mark Knopfler on a National Steel guitar in open tuning before being transformed into its iconic electric arrangement upon his acquisition of a 1961 Fender Stratocaster in 1977. The definitive studio version was recorded at Basing Street Studios in February 1978 under the direction of engineer Rhett Davies, who was known for his habit of printing studio effects, such as plate reverb and potential tape delay, directly to tape. The recording’s character is defined by Knopfler's clean, fingerstyle technique, which creates a precise, percussive tone that integrates lead lines and rhythm strumming into a cohesive, highly articulate arrangement.
