Recorded during the Machine Head sessions in December 1971, the song originated as a soundcheck jam at the Pavilion Theatre in Montreux. After the original venue burned down, the band moved to the Grand Hotel, where they used the Rolling Stones' mobile studio to finish the album. Needing more material to meet vinyl length requirements, they developed the jam into a complete track with lyrics about the fire. The arrangement is characterized by Blackmore's iconic riff, played with fingers in double-stop fourths, panned left, and doubled by Jon Lord's organ, which was run through a Marshall cabinet to mimic a guitar sound.
