The recording

Mark Knopfler recorded the song at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas (Nov‑Dec 1978) using a 1961 Fender Stratocaster with a maple neck, a Morley volume pedal and an MXR analog delay before a borrowed Fender Twin Reverb amp. The clean, bright tone and subtle delay give the riff its articulate sparkle, while the volume pedal provides dynamic swells. Production was overseen by Barry Beckett and Jerry Wexler with engineer Jack Nuber.
