Recorded during the Parade sessions in 1985/1986. Originally a demo Prince intended for the band Mazarati, Prince reclaimed the song, stripping away most instrumentation except the percussion and his own vocals/guitar. The iconic 'rhythm' sound was achieved as a studio experiment by engineer David Z and Coke Johnson, utilizing a noise gate on an acoustic guitar triggered by the hi-hat track to replace the need for a traditional bass-heavy rhythm section.
