The recording

The dual lead lines were recorded with Don Felder on a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard using its PAF humbuckers and Joe Walsh on a 1970s Fender Telecaster with the bridge single‑coil. Both guitars were routed directly into narrow‑panel Fender Tweed Deluxe and Tweed Champ amps respectively, then sent through a Maestro/Echoplex tape‑delay loop, with Walsh also adding a Phase‑90 for subtle movement. The amps were cranked to breakup, giving a warm, singing sustain that sits front‑and‑center in the mix. Producer Bill Szymczyk captured the tone with close mic’ing of the amp cabinets in the Record Plant’s Studio A.
