The recording
Recorded between 2002 and 2003 for the album 'American IV: The Man Comes Around', the track was produced by Rick Rubin. Contrary to the layered, industrial sound of the original, this version was built on a foundation of intimacy and vulnerability. The tracking sessions took place both at Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and in Hollywood, California. Musicians Mike Campbell and Smokey Hormel provided the delicate acoustic guitar performances, deliberately panned to create a wider, dry soundstage that places the listener in the room with the performer.
